Dear Friend, I spent the beginning of this week in Detroit, Michigan with several members of the recently formed bipartisan Policing Strategies Working Group to meet with local community leaders and discuss ways to rebuild police-community relations. In Detroit, I not only saw people who are resilient in the face of adversity, I saw hope. This same hope exists in other cities and neighborhoods throughout the country where trust between law enforcement and the people they serve has deteriorated. I am committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and folks across the country to achieve our shared goal of peace and security for our loved ones. We must get this right. After our roundtable discussion with local members of the community, the Working Group held our first press conference. To watch my remarks, click HERE.
Recognizing Standout Members of Our Community It was a pleasure to award David Kelley of Covington the Bronze Congressional Award this week. David has volunteered over 100 hours of his free time to support local programs by teaching dance classes to youth and offering guidance to Boy Scouts looking to move through the ranks. We are lucky to have you in our community, David. Keep up the good work! To learn more about the Congressional Award program and how to nominate someone, click HERE.
Acting Now to Prepare for the Future As we age and grow closer to retirement, we are often faced with issues and questions about our future that we did not have to think about in our younger years. This week, I met with the King County Aging & Disability Services Advisory Council – a group that is working on your behalf to answer some of those questions and provide seniors and the disabled with the information and resources they need to continue living fulfilling and productive lives. At our meeting we discussed their ideas about how to strengthen and protect Social Security and Medicare benefits.
Welcoming New Youth Advisory Board Every year I have the joy of welcoming a new group of bright and passionate students from our region to serve on my Youth Advisory Board. These young members of the community meet with me periodically throughout the year to offer me their unique perspective on the issues facing our district. This week I met the newest members of the Advisory Board and I look forward to learning from them just as I have from groups in the past. Enjoy the your first fall weekend and welcome to the new school year! |
