| Dear Friend, With its ice capped peaks and glacier covered ridges, there is no doubt that Mt. Rainier is one of the most beautiful backdrops in the country and one of America’s most prized natural treasures. I can’t think of a better way to welcome new citizens to our country than to invite them to enjoy the natural gems we are most proud of. That is why Mt. Rainier National Park made for the ideal location for a naturalization ceremony held this past week for newly recognized American citizens. This ceremony, along with 99 other naturalization ceremonies scheduled to take place at national parks around the country, was part of a celebration of the National Park Service’s Centennial year. Congratulations to America’s newest citizens.
Making the Most of Summer in WA08 With a full month of summer still ahead of us, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities in the warm weather with your family. One must-visit location is Snoqualmie Falls. The Falls are 268 feet high and range from 50 to 150 feet in width depending on current water levels – making it one of the most popular scenic attractions in our state. For a family that enjoys a challenge and loves hiking, there are endless miles of trails to explore in the Alpine Lake Wilderness. As someone who has explored many of the trails myself, I can tell you that the pristine lakes, sprawling meadows, and beautiful views are worth the work. If you are up for an adventure, then you should make the trip to the remote village of Stehekin on the northeast edge of Lake Chelan. Stehekin is so removed it can only be accessed by boat, seaplane, or on foot. Once you reach the village, you can take in the beautiful views and spend the day hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, and river rafting. There are also many opportunities in our region for individuals in the special needs community, including free and discounted passes to national and state parks, summer camps, life skills training, youth groups, and more! Please check out a long list of resources, HERE. We Must Work Toward Peace There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of my friends and colleagues who were killed in the line of duty. They – and the countless others that came before and after them – sacrificed it all to keep you and me safe. At a time when it is becoming increasingly dangerous to wear the badge, we must show our full support for the law enforcement community while we also work to ease police-community tensions. Please read my guest post for the Speaker about how we must all focus on our aligned goals of security, equality and peace. Please enjoy the beautiful summer weather and I will see you next time!
